Very unusual low humidity and cool breezes have been the norm this summer and I spent yesterday on the beach basking in the glory of it all. Sketching on the beach is difficult because everything is moving but last night I did this drawing from one of my photos. I would like to point you to my fellow artist and friend Jody Regan whose sketchbook is a treasure of beauty. Enjoy!

Honestly, that's all I can say about this summer. The heat has been unbearable and even though it's calmed down some, we are still in AC mode most of the time.  Saturday evening was beautiful though, and I took myself down to the harbor with a chair and a sketchbook and had a lovely interlude watching the birds and the boats and the shimmer of the late sun on the iridescent marsh grass. Yes, in a very short time the cold will be returning and we'll all be complaining. Well...maybe not all.... :D
I love summer but does it have to be so uncomfortably hot?

I love the afternoon light, particularly in the late Fall, when the sun sets early giving a brief golden glow to all it touches. The contrast with the deep shadows in the foreground is the hook. The three deckers are yellow and it's a great place to use the yellow/violet color harmony. This is an Urban scene in the Lithuanian Village area of Brockton. I'll work from this sketch to do this in oils where I think I can achieve more subtlety in the shadow area. Despite the heat we are enjoying an onshore sea breeze today and the tide is right to head to the beach with my book. Stay cool everyone!

Just Sketching

I bought some of those cool sketching pens you can use with paints and started doing some pen and ink sketches for my Gallery the Art Boutique at Tin City. The original watercolor of Joanie's Blue Crab Cafe was painted last Spring and I did this pen and ink w/c this afternoon. This is a fabulous little Road House out on Rte 41 in the Everglades. It's almost like the drawing part is the sit ups and the paint is the pool ;)
