Waiting for The Muse

"Joan 'n Tom" 6x8 Watercolor

I read a fabulous book called "My Name is Asher Lev" and was transfixed by both the excellent writing (Chaim Potok) and by the depth of the book which is the story of a young boy who is unable to suppress his innate 'gift' to draw in spite of his father's belief that he is wasting his time and that his "gift" quite possibly could come not from The Master of the Universe, but from the devil. It was a great story on many levels and it prompted me to want to do some pen and ink watercolors. This scene from MacMillan wharf in Provincetown is as familiar to me as my own hand. The boat on the left is named Joan and Tom. It's been there for as long as I can remember. I'm a bit rusty so I'll go back to the drawing board as the expression goes.
Thanks for all your encouraging comments and support. I'm enjoying summer and thinking about what I should paint next. No pressure.

Wow Mary! I love your watercolor work even more than your oils. This is beautiful and the colors exquisite.

I had to read that back way back in high school (as well as another Potok book, though the title momentarily escapes me). I couldn't have told you a bit of the story but your words make me want to re-read the book. I am going to do just that!

Summer is a great time to read and create art. I am a teacher and I love this time of year for just those reasons. I really like your pen and ink. The line quality is very nice and the colors are so vibrant. I hope you will do some more of these.

Yeah, could I be that rusty? This is lovely!

My opinion is NOT to wait for the Muse, but just feed her. Feed her by visiting galleries, by reading, by walking on the beach, by smelling the fresh skin on the back of your nephew's necks after their baths, by listening to soul-rocking music, and by flipping through your favorite art books. It's not a race, and you're not behind. xo

This is absolutely gorgeous! I'm sitting here admiring the traces of different colors in the water, the reflections of the boats....just lovely!

Wonderful colours. I have heard about that book many times, but I haven't read it. You've inspired me to put it on the top of my list.
Happy Painting.
