Cantaloupe Watercolor 8x10

Set Up
Initial block in
I have avoided painting cantaloupe because so many have done it so well. However, I tackled it today and although it needs more work, I'm posting it. Some of these daily painters just knock me out with their focus and ability to paint one beautiful piece after another. I'm trying to live up to my own expectations which is tougher than living up to anyone else's. Amen. Notice, I am using the kitchen ;) as it should be used.

Mary, I really enjoy the way you discuss the process of what you are doing as well as show us the wonderful paintings. I agree that our own expectations are the hardest to live up to.

Think you've got it spot on about our
own expectations - maybe we should start rating ourselves on how much we enjoy doing it instead!

Good observation and neat colour match...!

I think your cantalopes are wonderful and refreshing. I agree with you on how the kitchen should be used! Your top photo is excellent showing your tools of the trade. Why do pictures of supplies look so cute and inviting? Go ahead call me crazy -I thought that your watercolor palette would also make a nice watercolor painting. Think about it!

Aren`t mellons a great subject? The color contrast from outside to inside and the great textures. The kitchen makes a great studio, everything you need is right there.

Hi Mary,

You handled the cantaloupes very well, however I would have liked to have seen the area surrounding them,(which you have the liberty to organize), think it would have made it more interesting. Think of Cezannes many still lives with fruits, he never only just painted the fruits, but the table cloth, wall, chairs, knives,etc..

I like seeing all of the set up shots.

This might sound crazy, but they almost look like they're talking to each other...they really relate to each other...I find that kind of fun. Nice color and drawing.

Guess this is bit late, but thanks for coming to my blog. I like your cantalopes and the view of your work space, also your observations on our expectations. The painting a day group is such good experience. I keep wanting to try it, but work on larger more complex pieces at the moment. Stop by my blog again when you have time. paintingpat.blogspot.com Good Luck

I won't comment on your legendary melons! I love the process that you discuss, I never ever think to do that. Good for you for using watercolors, too - it's all the same, color, value, composition, and it's fun to shake it up!

P.S. Your cantalopes look edible!
