Your change of tone has actually changed the mood for me. A more finished look, but a bit of the whimsey is gone.

I do want to mention that this photo is a bit dark as I had trouble with glare.
The darkness makes the riders pop more. It gives it more richness. It still feels like a splash of summer.

Wow, Mary! Great figure work..good job. The darks help create contrast for your figures..the center of interest.
I think the grass on the left helped the painting a lot. Much more of a sense of the path and it is titled bicycle path after all.

Thanks for stopping by my page. Of course I had to stop by and peek at your paintings! And the very first one at the top of the page, I love. Your husband must be a wise man :) ---this painting is great just as it is. Is it plein air, or photo? If it's plein air, call me jealous---I see only snow out my window!
You mentioned the K Macpherson book--I loved it. I made my way through it in less than three days and that includes doing a few 'exercises' and keeping lists of what else to practice. I'll get to work on that promised book review!

Mary - I love this painting - but I must confess - I have a problem not knowing when to stop and rinse out my brushes - I have been known to ruin a picture with just one more stroke.

Thanks for your always kind words and support. I loved this painting. Not just the colors and the vibration, but what it brings to us: the sense of idleness, leisured times in family, summer (well, it's hot down here!), the pleasure of life... The man and his grey hair seems to be telling: I won! I lived my life, it wasn't easy, there were ups and downs, really hard moments but here I am. Mature and having fun like a boy!
Congratulation Mary and have fun in Naples, I love this town, I used to live in Miami and it was a pleasure drive to Naples to expend the weekend.
This painting looks and feels right to me. It's totally a Florida bike path... you hit the nail right on the head!
I agree that the latest version really captures the scene, but I miss some of the sparkle from the study. Maybe just a few highlights? But wait until it's good and dry so you can wipe them off if it doesn't work!

I appreciate all the comments and critiques. When ever I change something in a painting I notice that I feel some loss of spontaneity in the more finished piece.
