This lesson was about keeping the darks vibrant and not beginning the painting in too high a key, a foible of mine. If you start too light you can't make the highlights 'pop'. I also worked my edges more than usual to get a more vibrant feeling. Sorry about the glare but I really wanted to post it tonight rather than wait for daylight to shoot it again.

Am trying to get back into painting...with frustrating results. Have also had the trouble of starting out to high key...not sure when it happend and can not seem to get myself out of it. Will follow your advice.
Another reason to avoid higher key painting is because it kills color, and most pure color out of the tube is mid-to low key. Adding white to mid tones or lights (especially warm colors) cools and dulls. You've kept this vibrant by staying in the mid-tone sweet spot. Nice work.
i have no idea wht those other commentors are speaking of but it sounds damn cool. again, i love this. if i ever get rich and famous, which is highly unlikely, then i will buy this from you and pin it to my penthouse wall in st.tropez.

Wouldn't you like to be a pepper too?? And I drank Dr Pepper in the day too. Nice luscious brushwork! I think laying on thick oils just is what they were made to do...

I love this one- I'm usually scared to death of the red and green complements thing, afraid it will turn all it touches to christmastime, but you're made it look perfectly glowing, with such vibrant colors... love the purples in the shadows, too. so much to look at!
