Charles Sovek 1937-2007
I have just received the bad news that Charles Sovek died last Friday. His colorful and soundly constructed paintings were a joy to behold. His website is fascinating and in his total generosity, he had made his latest book The Basics available online.
I met him in 1991 when I took a workshop with him at North River Arts Society
and again last summer when he did a demo at South Street Gallery in Hingham.
Gone too soon, but his painting legacy will go on and on.

What a shame. Such talent, I just spendt about an hour checking out his work. its wonderful. thanks for sharing that.
Debbie,
that night last June he did a demo of watermelon slices on a plate. We were all rapt attention and completely engrossed while he painted. Afterward he commented on how quiet we were. We were all students when he painted.
some people just make the world such a better place.
Haven't had time to look at his website yet, but made a short visit to his book "Basics" and am thrilled about it! I give painting lessons to groups myself twice a week and find Charles Sovek's instructions very inspiring.
Thank you, Mary, for sharing it with us here. As you mention, it was very generous of him to put it on the internet.
Mar, I still can't believe he's gone. I was planning on taking his workshop again next summer. But I think often of his teachings, and his good, good attitude, and his generosity, and I'm grateful that I did get one week to study with him. No pictures, of course, but I have his books. What a good guy, too.
yes, he is very much missed. I had the good fortune to take a workshop with him down here in Old Lyme, CT last summer. It was probably one of the most meaningful, intense workshops I've taken. Very generous with good advice. I sure do wish he were around longer!
