"Studio Lights"

My studio is located in the Sandpaper Factory and I've long thought of doing a painting of the hallway which has sawtooth skylights on the roof which are just fabulous to look at as well as being functional. Such a great abstract subject.
As you walk down this hallway the lights in my studio are visible over the drywall so I called this painting, "Studio Lights". 
The Girls Just Wanna Paint subject this month is "the golden mean" which is a mathematical something or other which I don't understand well enough to define it, nor do I know whether this painting is an example of it.

Bella's Opening this Sunday 5-7

My Bella's Show is finally up. It was beautifully hung by my artist friend and bartender extraordinaire, Viv Harlow, who manages the art shows there. Come visit with me and other artist friends in the Little Bar on Sunday from 5-7.

Tootsie Pops

Who doesn't love Tootsie Pops? The candy is sweet and tangy and mixes beautifully with the chocolate middle. I spent yesterday at the studio finishing up the BIG painting, painting this one and have a third one in the works.

Open Studios is this weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 12-5. My inventory this year includes Prints priced from $20-$75.

Google 83 East Water Street for directions to my building. Enter on the left side and chug up the stairs to the 4th floor where I am the first studio. I'll have refreshments to revive you, chairs to sit on to catch your breath and lots of paintings of all sizes. This is the last time I will be offering such low prices on my larger works so get there early :D

Red Riot

Click to bid I am running out of pepper inspired names, but that isn't going to stop me. These paintings are going up for sale at the annual North River Arts Society's Holiday Sale, along with some recent watercolors that you can see here on this blog. Most works are priced under $100 (these). My Open Studios is also happening that weekend so I will divide up the available works between the Sale and the Studio.

Loading Dock Oil 8x10

I wanted to keep this painting fresh by not overdoing my paint application. I like an orange underpainting (which was dry) because it really vibrates the sky color. I used a mixture of Ultramarine, Viridian and Alizarin to lay in the dark shapes in one take. For some reason, I have strayed from this mixture and it feels like coming home to use it. It's a very versatile transparent dark and you can lean it towards any of the three colors. By adding white and some orange you get beautiful harmonious grays throughout the painting. I used an appropriate amount of red in my greens to push them back in the frame, and applied my paint stroke by stroke, wiping my brushes in between to keep the color fresh. I was never a one brush painter because some colors just need to be separated, but there is something to be said about limiting brushes to a few to keep the color harmonious. My husband thinks that the building needs some windows on the right side, but I just want to darken it with very carefully placed brushmarks to set it back more. It's too light to be the shadow side of the building. Maybe another stroke on the truck too. What do you think?

Loading Dock Watercolor 8x10

Another homage to old factory buildings. I can't help myself. Anyone want to weigh in on the tree shape in the middle? It started as a tree from the foreground and I later realized that it wasn't as logical as I'd like it to be. So I cropped. This is a scene I'll do again when those trees start turning.

Sandpaper Factory Studio

This is the before and after at the new studio. It took forever to sand this floor which was a grimy gray paint. My nephew, Win and I spent Saturday and Sunday all day and Don and I spent another 10 hours between Monday and yesterday. The results are well worth the agony of such a project which, I'll never be doing again :D This is the 4th floor of the building which has fantastic skylights over the entire roof. This is one of the very few remaining buildings of its kind in this area. I was lucky to get a space here.
