Maine Cottage

SOLD
Don and I took a ride to Goodland, a tiny fishing village at the Northeastern tip of Marco Island which is a mixed bag of newer and older (funky) homes and trailers. One tiny lane across from Old Marco Crab House is on a skinny peninsula with houses on one side and a canal on the other side so despite the small no trespassing sign at the end we drove up there to look at the view and turn around. Of course I had to get out and take some photos and that's when I was bagged by Mr Important who came out of his house and berated me for trespassing mentioning that he owns both sides of the street and didn't I think I should knock on someone's door and ask permission blah blah blah and 'we don't want....this....." I think he meant to say 'interlopers like YOU'. He did say, spreading his hands "we pay money for this." That never happened in Maine when I was photographing the beautiful cottages in Stonington. People are very friendly there.
This is a larger painting (8x10) of the Downeast cottage.

Gorgeous, Mary. Sorry about Mr. Big Moneypayer, sheesh!

Mary thats a very un-maineish Maine experience isn't it! Now I am going to be nervous when we do the same thing (which we do, oops). Anyway, the resulting painting is beautiful, and is so obviously Maine it just couldn't be anywhere else!

I deleted my post when I realized I had thought the painting was of a house in Goodland!Where we had dinner the night before we left Marco. I love the perfect freshness of this!

Beautiful, fresh painting! I had a run-in with a local, an episode very much like yours. And I did not stay to argue ... he looked like a member of ZZTop, only 200 pounds heavier.

There's a lot I really like about this painting, like the high-toned yellow on the shadow side of the house. You have no fear of color. Yay! And I'm nuts for the ledge out in the water. You're wicked good.

Oh, this story is so common...Mr. Big-stuff!

This painting, however, is not common at all.....it's amazing! I love the way you handle the paint and color.

Yes, very friendly on Deer Isle... Lovely painting.

It sounds like Mr. Important has spent too much time next to the Crab House . . . bad joke, but I couldn't resist! Your Maine Cottage is so appealing, so warm and inviting. Love the lavendar door. Very nice!

sounds like our lovely painting experience at Mary's landing!
Mr. Important lives in every state.

Great story. My dad had an experience like that here in Texas except the home owner, a lady with a beautiful field of bluebonnets, came out with a shotgun.

Too bad Mr. Important isn't affected by the beauty surrounding him. But happy you weren't bothered by Mr. I attitude and painting a quite beautiful piece.

Well, rude guy Mary but such a beautiful painting! You know I love those yellow cottages! Great light on this and love everything about it!

What a great painting!!!! Makes you want to be there!
And while I sympathize with our wanting to photograph the view... I also (and I am obviously alone here) feel for people who live in those beautiful places - imagine you are just sitting down to tea and a car pulls up and people start running all over your yard taking pictures. As a person who freaks a little when she realizes people are standing under my dining room window as I sit at the table.... it's always a good idea to ask! It is, after all, their home - but, that being said, yelling is not a good idea for them either - they should have a sign....

Well it is settled then. I absolutely want to live right here in this house! And there are some people on this earth that are just plain old mean. And that little photo of you (and your husband?) that says you are away from your desk is so cute!

What an enchanting piece, Mary. it is the perfect painting for stepping inside to feel the sunshine and the ocean breezes.
When the Native Americans were approached by the white settlers about buying land, they had no concept because they understood that the Earth is not ours to own; we are only temporary stewards. Too bad Mr. Important's ego will never allow him to grasp that truth.

Indeed!!! At first I thought it was the house in Florida and thought gee...that looks like the house in Maine. Lovely painting, Mary.

Thanks for all your wonderful comments and just to clarify, lest I sound like a scofflaw who doesn't respect other people's privacy, that is not at all, the case.
I would never go onto their property or close to their windows or step on their flowers or pick their tomatoes. I was on the road and I have a zoom lens ;)

Hi Mary, this painting is delightful. Sure makes you want to be there! My house is now painted yellow and a neighbor called me last week to say every time she looked at it, it looked like such a happy house. I agree. Yellow is "happy." Now I'll make you "happy", I'll tell you I want it!E-mail me about the money because I don't do pay pal. Will you sell it to me? Mary Bruno

LOL! Mary, I'm so glad you shared the story for this one! Too funny! I'm not a fan of Goodland. We had to go there last year to watch some sort of playoff football game. (We lost our cable...long story.) Anyway, one of our neighbors kept talking about Goodland this, Goodland that. Well we went...I'm not a fan!! Of course I didn't venture too far out like you did! I bet that guy has had some bad run-ins with "drinking" tourists out there! Great, great painting!!!!

Egad... I wonder if Mr.THISISMYLANDANDNOWONEELSECANENJOYITEVER got up on the wrong side of the bed or whether he's always like that.

haha--busted! What a crabby guy! There's an old house I want to get photos of but I'm not sure if anyone is living there. I would definitely need to go on their land to shoot. Guess, I'll maybe knock on the door? Love your painting. Classic.
