I made this little sketch in pen and ink before doing the painting. Some elements have been eliminated to showcase the smooth water and Spencer's Island which is off to the left. This is where the Mary Celeste was built. I often wish I could go back in time and see what this land looked like during the Age of Sail.

I love the dramatic light in this painting which was the point to begin with. My patient husband stopped dozens of times for me to take photos on this ride down to Five Islands last summer. I photographed every barn we passed from multiple angles. Typically I tell Don to drive down the road and turn around which gives me a chance to shoot quite a few pictures. This stunning location is at Spencer's Island, Nova Scotia, looking across to Cape Blomidon. The light was great but I was also tickled by the juxtaposition of the remote location with the satellite dish!
