Corita Kent's 'Rainbow Swash' Iconic Landmark Gas Tank on Boston Harbor 8x8 oil on cradled panel SOLD
Happy 2012. I wish every one
of you, along with my dearest family and friends a fresh outlook on life, more
kindness given and received, more moments lived in the 'now', more compassion
for all living beings, more satisfaction with the 'little' things that happen
daily and joy from inside.
I am blessed with much yet, sometimes I see the glass
as half empty when it's half full. Why? It's human nature. I don't believe that
it's realistic to be happy, happy, happy every moment. Life's a tapestry of good
stuff and not so good stuff. I have to remind myself to look at the gifts I've
been given in the people I care about, the world I live in, and the gift of being able to translate light and form into my vision of what I see.
I
so appreciate the journey that this blog has taken me on and I am delighted at
all the comments and visits I received and the relationships that have come from being a part
of a global art community. I wish for all of you to find
your bliss, whatever it is and let it light you from within. That's the only
happiness that's lasting and satisfying.
This iconic Gas Tank at the
edge of Boston Harbor was painted in 1971 by Corita Kent and was eventually torn
down and rebuilt. Each company, the latest being National Grid, has elected to
repaint it as she did. The GJWP December Challenge which I chose, was Local
Landmarks and I am impressed at what the girls came up
with!!
Also, My MacBook Pro is on order and I am still limping along with my Dell which runs for about 6-9 minutes and freezes or crashes. Slow going but I'm about to join the Mac Cult. Pass the kool-aid please :D

Hi GypsY Woman! I love that the various companies have painted the tank a la Corita Kent.
And The BrunZ and I wish you a most wonderful New Year!
This is a gorgeous painting MSW...love your style a lot
Love this painting Mary, and I love the gas tanks...it's great public art and a true landmark for us South Shore folks. Glad you're joining the Mac side...it has been a major improvement for me...best of luck with your new computer.
Beautiful painting! You will not be disappointed with the ease of transfer to the Apple World. Happy New Year to you!
You and Kelley have made this so iconic!
Love this tank.
And you!
Happy new year- may your glass always be a little on the full side.
Great painting to start off the new year!!!
So cool, Mary! Didn't Kelley paint this as well? Nice to hear a bit of its history and what an homage to Corita. Wishing all that you said right back at you for 2012 and beyond.
This painting positively glows...a fitting image for the beginning of a new year! I am glad I started my day today admiring it and reading your lovely thoughts on life...the Happiest of New Years to you!
This is ONE KICK ASS painting girl!
Can't wait to see what magic is going to come out of that new Mac Book! So glad you are coming over to the other side! 2012 is gonna be a good one for all of us- I can just tell.
was cruising DPW and thought i recognized those tanks from somewhere. thought maybe on my way to maine from cape cod. i had to come read your post to see if i was right. awesome job on them!
we cross paths alot(you go to florida for the winter too dont you) i'm in key west for the winter. we'll have to meet (and paint) someday. happy new year and i wish you loads of cool painting sessions in 2012
Mary, great painting top to bottom. I love the tanks (still plural to me). Remember how the original had supposedly Ho Chi Minh (sp?) in the blue? When her design was repainted, the blue was altered slightly and his profile disappeared.
Urban legend? Not sure, but I DO remember seeing the profile back then.
Regardless, great painting.
Happy New Year MSW!! You are starting it out with a bang. Wonderful painting! Hope all good things for everyone 2012!!
Wonderful lively painting! I grew up in Boston and it brings back so many memories. I remember the Ho Chi Minh reference too. Welcome to the Mac cult! I'm on my third since 1987 so they work and last and you will love it! All the best to you in 2012!
Very cool Mary! Love hearing about the background of the landmark. Here's hoping 2012 is great for all of us!
"You turned an object I can hardly tolerate into a thing of such beauty and made me appreciate it and see it in a new way. That is my definition of what an artists power is."
