Plein Air Study

I met Sally Dean at Green Harbor this morning for a plein air workout. Trust me, it was a workout. Let me count the ways things can go awry when painting boats. The tide is going out. The sun is moving. The boats are moving. After fighting the composition by wiping out some of the boats, I settled on just making a complete statement and spent the rest of the time making the painting work. Using artistic license I eliminated the rest of the houses and boats and made the trees look like Maine. I didn't see it until I photographed it but there's a major tangent running from the cabin of the boat up the edge of the house. I think I'll give it another try tomorrow.
The actual scene

I painted there! In Colin's class! Lucky you to have a girlfriend painter to be with. Yesterday was a struggle for me, to - I was painting right across from you guys! The tide, the twisty boats, and in the p.m., when my light was better - screeching, tearing wind that took my palette, my canvas, tipped over my brushes, my hair was plastered across my eyes - and a group of people sat on a deck and WATCHED. Could they hear my cussing, do you think?

Ah, the joys of plein air! When it works it's unbelievable. When it doesn't,it's painful. You made the best of an adverse situation, so I say bravo.Paint on girl friend!

I wish I had been there with you guys! My favorite plein air boat problem is when the owner comes and drives/sails the boat away right at the critical moment. I seem to be good at picking those boats... Nice job!
