Desert Study WIP

Our recent trip to the Southwest was a sensory overload. We visited Sedona, Jerome and the Grand Canyon. I'm bravely posting this 8x8 study of the desert landscape from a photo I shot from the car. The photo is poor but I'm getting some nice color here. The painting is much lighter than it is showing. What I'm going to do is open a book and see how someone else might have handled this subject. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, which ever way you celebrate.

Merry Christmas, Mary~ Thanks for posting the drive-by painting. I have 72 million reference photos that want to be made into paintings and this inspires me.

Merry Christmas Mary! Lovely painting--inspires me to paint some landscapes! Maybe in 2009, I can start plein air painting again.

Looking forward to 2009. . .

Mary - if you want to try and get the colours of a painting closer to what they are in reality try looking at the 'levels' function if you have that in your graphics software. I find that making adjustments there is most effective at getting an image closer to reality.

Mary - Hope you Christmas was wonderful and here's wishing you a great 2009.

I love this painting - the colors are wonderful. Paint it as it spoke to you is the only thing I can say.

Since I wasn't there to see the real thing if this was dropped in my lap I would darken the colors and add a full moon - this reminds me so much of the desert at night.

Mary,
I'm so jealous of your recent trip to the Southwest! I've always wanted to go to Arizona and New Mexico. I've even thought of moving out there just to get away from all of this cold and snow here in Maine. I love the colors of your recent work and you've really captured the flavor of the southwest. Happy New Year's!
