Gung Hay Fa Toy

That means Happy New Year in Chinese. I love everything Oriental and by no coincidence worked for many years, as a waitress at a Chinese restaurant. On Chinese New Year they closed the restaurant and had a big feast. All patrons and employees of the restaurant were invited to and attended a big party with many dishes of traditional Chinese food which is not chow mein or fried rice or batter fried shrimp and chicken. One year the owners took us all into Chinatown, in February, in Boston. Cold? Oh Yes. But we ate, with chopsticks because they really had no forks in 1982 in this little funky Chinatown hole in the wall. It was great. We never missed a beat either with those chopsticks. Honestly, for 10 courses. The next day we discovered that my friend's barefeet (yes she wore open toed shoes in cold winter Boston) were all red dye from the confetti lying in the streets. www.123chinesenewyear.com/
This tiny 2"x3" oil on board depicts the 3 Lucky Chinese Coins. The red ribbon symbolizes the lifeblood of money.

Painting Every Day

We all know that there are no shortcuts and no tricks to being able to see and paint well.
Only "miles of canvas" can make you a good painter. I'm posting this shot of the studio today so you can get a look at my works in progress. I've also been posting at this new site

Incense Burner

I had an awful time trying to get a good shot of this painting and this still isn't what I wanted. Too much glare. It's 2"x3".

Garlic Again

Garlic is a perfect study because of its form. It's quite similar to painting the figure when you think about it. The old masters painted the same subjects over and over and they learned alot about what they were looking at. It takes miles of canvas to be a good painter.
This painting is 2"x3". Buyers can contact me at wendl15@comcast.net

Barbaro

They finally had to put this beautiful horse down. My husband says I feel more for animals than people and there's some truth to that. I've always had cats, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs, etc.. and currently am owned by two cats
who travel with me to Florida and Nova Scotia every year and are endless sources of amusement and comfort to both Don and me. Each year when I watch the Triple Crown races I'm near tears before they even break from
the gate. Partly because of the majesty and dignity of the horses and mostly
Horses are incredibly delicate animals given their size and strength, and can easily die from seemingly minor afflictions.
This post is dedicated to beautiful, majestic Barbaro.

Boston from Hull Gut

I'm not sure if this painting comes across well on the computer screen. Looks a little neon, but it's subtler than that. I painted it one evening, in late fall as the sun set quickly over the city of Boston.
I just gave the water a few finishing touches today voila! It's done.

Green Eggs

It pains me to plagiarize Duane's egg paintings
But today while I was making a 3 egg omlet I
cracked open a double yolk and thought, "I've got
to paint it."
Here it is.

My Sumi-e Set

I am an admirer of Duaine Keiser of Virginia who does 'A Painting A Day' blog here on Blogspot. How you get really good is to paint 'miles of canvas' to quote an influential teacher of mine. This painting is approximately 6x8. It needs a touch more 'tweaking' but it's going to turn out well.
Go to my links and click on When I Grow up to find Duaine's blog. He's inspirational to artists like me who procrastinate too much.

Nova Scotia

Our two weeks in Nova Scotia were wonderful ,as usual. I really am a gypsy in my soul and it seems my mate enjoys the gypsy ways. It didn't bother either of us that the weather was somewhat poor the entire time. We had the usual bay of Fundy fogginess and mist but we also had rain almost daily except for one or two days. The good part was that mostly every rainy day had some breaks in it somewhere. We took the usual ride "downshore" to Advocate, a tiny (pop in the 100's) village where Don's mother grew up. It is always an awesome trip. Don read 4 books and I painted alot. Here's my lupine and daisy still life in Barbara's white pitcher.

Yellow Pansy

Happy Spring everyone. This painting belies the fact that the sun hasn't come out in a week or so here in dreary rainy New England. I must confess that I spend 4 months of the winter in Naples, Florida getting my solar fix and I'm still charged up. Being a NE girl and a painter, I do like the coziness of the gloomy weather. You can stay indoors and not feel guilty about not getting out and doing more ( like more yardwork or something) but, you can see why people suffer more in this climate. Florida has over 300 sunny days a year. They don't call it the sunshine state for nothing! SOLD

Painting Adjustment

This is the final version of this knife painting. I toned down the previously alizarin edges with a cool vibrant lavender blue. Mailed it off today to the North River Arts Juried show.

I'm Back on the Blog Again

I really have been painting. I've been working on a portrait of my neighbor, Bob and his teacup Yorkie, Shelby.

Thursday, March 23, 2006

I've also been working on some watercolors. This scene is a fish house in Goodland,a funky old fishing village and one of my favorite places. Hate to say, but it's now marred with half million dollar condos (which is cheap for here) and waterfront lots are listing at 4 million. Ten years ago you could buy the same thing for about $200,000. Ah.... hindsight.......

Something to Blog About

Seems like blogging has gotten away from me. Mostly it's because I spend the winter in Naples, Florida and life is different here.
Difference is, I'm not working in my Cleaning Lady disguise and there is much less work to this house than there is to the one in Marshfield.
I'm trying to be diligent about my work which would include the marketing and PR aspects. Not my strong suit.
This painting was done strictly with a palette knife. I used only white to mix my colors. This style of painting was made famous by Henry Hensche of the Cape Cod School, in Provincetown and is taught today by some of his original students.
I may go over the pink around the edges and tone it down. Sorry about the lousy cropping here.
